Right Honourable Prime Minister,
Last year, nearly 150,000 people requested that you monitor Canadian mining
companies to ensure they behave in a responsible manner in their operations
abroad. |
The final report of a recent national consultation* echoed this request.
It recommended adopting Canadian standards to assess the social and
environmental performance of mining companies. |
We therefore request that you adopt the recommendations of the report,
including the immediate establishment of an ombudsperson’s office. |
This office will receive and investigate complaints and make recommendations
to ensure that Canadian mining companies abroad respect human
rights and the environment. |
To fulfil its mandate, the ombudsperson must be independent and have
adequate human and financial resources. The results of its investigations
must be made public.
