Right Honourable Prime Minister,
Last year, nearly 150,000 people requested that you monitor Canadian mining companies to ensure they behave in a responsible manner in their operations abroad.
The final report of a recent national consultation* echoed this request. It recommended adopting Canadian standards to assess the social and environmental performance of mining companies.
We therefore request that you adopt the recommendations of the report, including the immediate establishment of an ombudsperson’s office.
This office will receive and investigate complaints and make recommendations to ensure that Canadian mining companies abroad respect human rights and the environment.
To fulfil its mandate, the ombudsperson must be independent and have adequate human and financial resources. The results of its investigations must be made public.
