Development and Peace urges Canadian government to ensure responsible mining practices in the Global South.
Canadian companies dominate the global mining industry. Many act responsibly but some have been implicated in human rights violations abroad, and their irresponsible mining practices have resulted in environmental destruction, violence and disrupted livelihoods in the Global South, according to Development and Peace.

To the Minister of Foreign Affairs,

Canada is the world’s leading mineral exploration nation. Some Canadian mining companies have been implicated in cases of human rights violations and major environmental degradation in countries of the Global South, jeopardizing the health, security and well-being of entire communities. Too often, the voice of those affected is not respected when decisions about mining operations are made.

Canadian mining companies must be transparent in their overseas activities and must conduct them in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. They must be called to account by our government.

Therefore, I support Development and Peace in asking the Canadian government to:

Refuse Canadian government support to mining companies that do not respect international environmental and
human rights standards.

Develop legal mechanisms that ensure mining companies are held accountable for their actions in the Global South.
