I want my government pension plan to reflect my values of justice
Our government pension funds have a lot of financial clout. They’re big. They’re long-term. They’re looking to maximize gains and minimize risk. Our mandatory government pension plans are some of the biggest going.
Our public pension funds are invested in part in Canadian and foreign-owned mining companies of every size, operating all over the globe.
Some mining companies have been implicated in cases of human rights violations and major environmental degradation in countries of the Global South, jeopardizing the health, security and well-being of entire communities.
Recently, responsible investing criteria have been adopted to manage our public pension investments (CPPIB policy, La caisse policy). With this criteria came a promise to interact with mining companies about their corporate behaviour, insisting on improved social responsibility.
