Since 2003, the war in Iraq causes more victims every day and endangers the hopes for stability in the Middle East. It is in this context that Development and Peace’s local partners struggle, in Iraq and in the region, to defend life and human dignity, and to promote peace. With determination and professionalism, our partners come to the aid of displaced persons in the center and the north of the country and of refugees in neighbouring countries. Nearly 5 million persons are displaced within and outside Iraq, representing a severe humanitarian crisis.
Establishing peace in Iraq relies first and foremost on the political and diplomatic efforts of the different parties in the conflicts. However, it is also in the hands of an emerging and promising civil society that wants to be supported to contribute to the peace and development efforts. For the last year and a half, Development and Peace has deepened its aid program in Iraq by working with approximately fifteen Iraqi community organisations and NGOs from the north, center and south of the country. These organisations, including several youth organisations, have engaged in peace-building and conflict resolution programs. This project is effectuated in collaboration with the Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue (FDCD), based in Lebanon, and with CIDA’s financial support.
« Salam Al-Rafidayn/ Salutations to the country of two rivers, Iraq » is the project’s news bulletin, produced in Beirut by FDCD. We have posted here the 3rd bulletin which shows a midway update on the project. The original Arabic version is available on FDCD’s website.
