Development and Peace sends $100 000 to help people
displaced by the conflict in Lebanon.

July 20, 2006
Toronto

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE has provided $100 000 to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the escalating violence in Lebanon. These funds will be divided equally between two sister organizations to help displaced families as well as numerous refugees and migrant workers caught in the precarious situation now facing Lebanon.

Caritas Lebanon, a Catholic development organization working for impoverished people in the country, will provide emergency assistance to displaced families in South Lebanon and Greater Beirut. With children a priority, 50,000 families in need will find shelter and comfort and will receive food and medical assistance within the framework of this program. This emergency support began during the first days of the conflict and will continue if necessary for two months.

Caritas Lebanon - Migrant Center (CLMC) will come to the aid of hundreds of migrant workers and refugees in Beirut, by providing them with shelter, food and medicine. The beneficiaries of this program are men and women refugees from diverse countries as well as workers from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. They will be housed at the Saint Vincent Daughters of Charity convent located in the mountains north of Beirut. The project begins immediately and will last three months.

These emergency relief projects follow on the heels of a project supported by DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE last June in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which provided $80,000 to Caritas Jerusalem, to help 2 600 people in need in the Palestinian territories.

Similarly to DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE, Caritas Lebanon and the CLMC are members of Caritas Internationalis, a network of 162 autonomous, Catholic, emergency relief, development and social service organizations working in 200 countries and territories. These projects in Lebanon will be coordinated in collaboration with Lebanese officials, as well as with other NGOs and United Nations agencies in the region.
