| Development and Peace is contributing $100,000 towards helping meet the needs of some of an estimated 2.38 million people displaced by fighting in northwest Pakistan.
The United Nations has warned of a long-term humanitarian crisis, which could further destabilise the region.
Barbara Trachsel, Emergency Program Officer, Development and Peace said: "Most of those affected are women and children as many men stayed behind to look after crops and animals. This is the largest displacement of people since the Rwanda crisis in 1994.
We are working with our long standing partners in the country to provide emergency relief to those who have fled their homes, but we are also gravely concerned for the people trapped inside the conflict area."
Development and Peace partners, including Caritas Pakistan, are responding to the needs of displaced families in the camps by providing emergency healthcare and tents. However, large numbers, up to an estimated 90%, are staying with family or friends and in public buildings such as schools and stadiums. They are being supplied with food, cooking kits and other basic necessities in an attempt to avoid overstretching the host communities.
Money sent by Development and Peace (Caritas Canada) is to be used to support these efforts.
Development and Peace is accepting donations for further emergency relief in Pakistan so that help can be extended to more of those in need.
