The Filipino community of Montreal donated this amount, collected during fund-raising activities over the past few weeks, to the emergency relief programs set up by Caritas Philippines, a partner of Development and Peace. At the end of September 2009, a major typhoon and torrential rains devastated the country, causing severe damage to Manila, the capital city, and leaving many of its 12 million inhabitants in dire straits.

Development and Peace has received $190,000 in emergency relief donations from the Canadian public, as well as a $300,000 grant from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to support the work of Caritas Philippines in this emergency.
