Share Lent Launch in Ottawa a success
March 6, 2009 |
 |
Members of Development and Peace in the Ottawa-Gatineau region have launched the 2009 Share Lent Campaign with style. On Thursday February 26th, 2009 people passing by the Human Rights Monument in downtown Ottawa could witness a large gathering of about 60 people (including Conservative MP Royal Galipeau), speeches, music and free fair-trade hot chocolate.
The Ottawa French and English Diocesan Councils had worked together to create this public event, which included speeches by Archbishop Terence Prendergast (Ottawa) and Archbishop Roger Ébacher (Gatineau), music by the choir Just Voices, and testimonies from Development and Peace members. These were Joan O’Connell from Ottawa who visited Ecuador this past summer on an exposure trip and Françoise Lagacé who visited Sierra Leone with a group of Gatineau members.
The big Development and Peace banners with the Share Lent slogan 'I believe, I give' formed the background for the speakers who all in different ways talked about sharing our resources with the world’s poor in a time of economic crisis. After the public event, participants walked in procession to the nearby St. Theresa’s church hall for warm soup and fellowship.

Grade 6 students show off Development and Peace partners
February 27, 2009 |
 |
Under the guidance of teacher Kate Schenk, the grade 6 students at Immaculate Conception School in Prince George, British Columbia, developed posters describing 7 partners of Development and Peace in the global south. The descriptions give some background about the partners’ countries along with a colourful array of pictures. Each poster explains the problems in that particular country and what our partner is doing to alleviate these problems. The students were excited with the project and had lots of fun doing it. They did an excellent job and must be praised for it.
The posters will be passed around the parishes in the Diocese of Prince George so that our parishioners will become familiar with the work being done by our partners in the south, thanks to their donations. - Sergio Petrucci, Development and Peace member from Prince George
