Since the beginning of the 1990s, the aim of our program in Guinea has been to strengthen civil society organizations in the country in order to ensure citizen participation and encourage democracy.
In 2007, the country experienced a period of turmoil. Rampant inflation, extreme poverty and inaccessible food led to mass protests where the population demanded change from the government, and in which our partners played an active role. These popular movements, however, were brutally repressed, and the ensuing violence, instability and impunity traumatised the population. In January 2010, a peace accord was signed that brings hope for a transition to peace in the country.
Our current program inserts itself into this new historical dynamic in Guinea, placing priority on civic education and the respect of human rights. We support agricultural and economic initiatives that promote food sovereignty, good governance and the fair and sustainable development of the country. Our partners include women’s groups, unions, peasant organizations and associations of workers in the informal work sector.
