Association of Human Rights Abuse Victims (SPKP HAM)
Defending human rights in the Aceh region of Indonesia was dangerous work. Members of the SPKP HAM who took on this work were intimidated, persecuted and even kidnapped. Despite having to pursue their work in secret, they did not abandon their mission.
With courage and determination, they helped victims obtain medical care and search for family and friends who disappeared. They also gave legal assistance to those unjustly arrested and investigated human rights violations.
Following a peace agreement in 2005, the days of secrecy ended, however, many needs remained pressing. Today, the SPKP HAM continues to be vigilant in its work. It offers human rights education and psychological counselling to people traumatized by both years of war and the shock of the 2005 tsunami.
