Development and Peace first implemented a program to support Madagascan organizations in 1975. In the beginning, this aid was mainly earmarked for rural advancement and peasant farmer education projects.
In the early 1990s, the scope of the program was broadened to include support for the democratization process, which led to funds being earmarked for civic education, election monitoring and building a network of peasant farmer groups, fishermen groups and neighbourhood organizations. Part of this aid also went towards economic solidarity initiatives in both urban and rural areas.
Today, Development and Peace continues to support Madagascan society with the aim of strengthening social movements, promoting alternative development models, empowering women and increasing citizen participation.
