| Join Development and Peace in calling for a mining ombudsperson to hear the concerns of those in the Global South affected by Canadian mining companies.
Where there is gold, we expect to find wealth. But that’s often not how our world works. In many communities where natural resources are being mined and extracted, there is only desolation and poverty. In contrast, Development and Peace promotes sustainable human development through participatory management, democratic control and the equitable distribution of resources.

| Last year, 153,000 people asked the government of Canada to ensure that Canadian mining companies be responsible in their activities abroad. The final report of the national roundtables consultation held by the federal government on the issue last year agrees. It recommends creating a framework of corporate social responsibility for the extractive companies. Social and environmental standards would be put in place, as would an ombudsperson to respond to complaints that Canadian companies working in the Global South are not respecting these standards. |
