Development and Peace uses advocacy as a strategy to fulfill its mission of building a more just world. Through its advocacy work, Development and Peace calls for changes to structures, systems and policies that negatively affect communities in the Global South, and proposes sustainable and just alternatives.
How do we take action?
In order to influence decision-makers, Development and Peace takes action by educating and mobilizing Canadians, engaging in dialogue with elected officials, taking official positions, and launching petitions.
Who do we work with?
In our advocacy work, Development and Peace collaborates with our partners in the Global South, as well as with national and global coalitions and networks. Our members are our front-line advocates.
Four Advocacy Issues
Ecological justice, which includes both climate and environmental justice, includes the economic, political, social, environmental and spiritual well-being of all people. Development and Peace supports policies and practices that allow people to live together in harmony with the Earth. It also recognizes the historic responsibility of wealthy countries for the ecological impacts of their model of development.
At the Heart of the Action for Ecological Justice
Create a Climate of Change
Since 2006, Development and Peace has been advocating for access to justice for communities negatively affected by the activities of Canadian mining companies in the Global South. We are asking the Canadian government to create an independent ombudsperson who can be a voice for justice here in Canada for those whose rights have been violated by Canadian extractive companies operating overseas.

A Voice for Justice
In collaboration with its partners and allies, Development and Peace is asking decision-makers to support the development of agriculture that is ecologically responsible and to put small-scale, family farming and local democracy at the heart of our food systems, so that peasants and small-scale farmers can participate in and control their own food production (land, seeds, etc.) and contribute to policies that affect them.
