It is with great sadness that Development and Peace has learned of the passing of Eileen McCarthy, a long-time member and former National Council President of Development and Peace, on December 14th.
Eileen made an enduring contribution to the life and dynamism of Development and Peace, first as an active member in her diocese of St. Catharines, then as a National Council member for Ontario and eventually as National Council President from 1991 to 1993. Her commitment and passion for social justice shone through all of her work as an educator with the Ontario Catholic School system and in all the projects she undertook for Development and Peace.
One of her most ambitious and significant undertakings with our organization was to lead the production of Journey of Solidarity, a book published by Novalis in 1992 that gives a spiritual account of the first 25 years of Development and Peace in fulfilling its mission of social justice and solidarity with the Global South. It is a true testimonial of the commitment of members like Eileen, who have energized our movement throughout the years.
Eileen will be greatly missed by all those who knew her in the Development and Peace family, and her legacy will live on through the many ways she contributed to our organization.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
