At Development and Peace, we believe that there is room at the table for all. However, 1 billion people are still suffering from hunger – that’s 1 in 8 people of the entire human family! This fall, Development and Peace continues to answer the call of Pope Francis to fight the global scandal of hunger, by launching an education campaign about the role of women and men family farmers in fighting hunger.

The disappearance of Manila Bay

There are 2.8 million Syrian refugees and each has a face and a name

Yahia Khaled is a Syrian refugee in Jordan.

The conflict in Syria has been ongoing for over three years now, and it has forced 2.8 million to flee the country. It is a shocking number that makes us take a moment to reflect on the sheer number of people who have abandoned their homes to escape the violence. Yet such a large number can make us lose sight that it represents 2.8 million individuals, each with a name and a story, each who had a home and a history that was all left behind with only bits and pieces carried away in a suitcase.

A World Cup for all

It doesn’t take much to get a game of soccer going. A ball and some makeshift goalposts are all that are required for anyone to start a match. Its accessibility is surely one of the main reasons why the sport is so popular and can be seen played in even some of the remotest corners of the world. Yet, this summer’s 2014 World Cup, currently taking place in Brazil, has raised many questions as to whether soccer is still every person’s sport.

An ongoing commitment to the reconstruction of Haiti

Artisans of Peace

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli President Shimon Peres have accepted an invitation by Pope Francis to pray for peace in the Holy Land at the Vatican this Pentecost Sunday.

During his recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Pope said, “All of us want peace. Many people build it day by day through small gestures and acts; many of them are suffering, yet patiently persevere in their efforts to be peacemakers.”

Praying for Food for All: Launch of a prayer card contest

This fall, Development and Peace will focus its education campaign on the injustice of world hunger, and the importance of supporting small family farmers as key to feeding the planet. We began to raise awareness on this issue during our last Share Lent campaign by joining in the global Caritas Internationalis campaign called One Human Family, Food for All. This theme inspires us to take action to ensure that all of our brothers and sisters around the world have enough food to eat.
