One dollar for one world!

Last Saturday, I participated in a luncheon with the Member of Parliament for my riding of Rosemont-Petite-Patrie, Alexandre Boulerice of the NDP. During the meeting, I had the opportunity to explain to those present that Development and Peace’s financing from CIDA had been drastically reduced and that the future of Canadian international development was becoming worrisome.

At the meeting, I also gave Mr. Boulerice my dollar for one world.

One Dollar for One World is an initiative of the members of Development and Peace in response to the $35 million funding cut to Development and Peace’s budget over the next five years. It entails sending a $1 coin to your MP as a symbolic gesture to let him or her know about your concerns regarding CIDA’s decision and in particular its impact on Development and Peace’s partners in the Global South.

After I finished speaking, Mr. Boulerice added that according  to the United Nations, wealthy nations are meant to set aside 0.7% of their GNP to go towards international aid, yet Canada only provides 0.3%, and this amount was further cut in the latest Federal budget presented last Thursday…
