There are so many exciting components to our Share Lent campaign this year, that we felt like we had to have a national launch to kick it all off. It was one of the first times that we were having this type of launch for the campaign – a moment of recognition that the campaign was now off and running – and it quickly became a moment of many firsts!
When we learned that we would be celebrating the launch in the presence of Archbishop Barreto, with whom we work on issues of ecological justice in his diocese of Huancayo, Peru, and Archbishop Smith, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, it seemed like we had to share it with as many as we could. We launched ourselves into another first for Development and Peace and did a live webcast of the event. So, along with the many in the Assembly Hall at the Archdiocese of Edmonton, we could feel the presence of all those who were also with us from across the country to partake in this moment of celebration.
As with many firsts, however, it doesn’t always go according to plan. About midway through the launch, the broadcast cut. Eventually it came back on, but we apologize to those who were momentarily blacked out. But such is the nature of firsts – if you don’t take the risk, you can’t get better. If we hadn’t taken a chance on organizing the first ThinkFast, we wouldn’t be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. If we had thought it too difficult to bring solidarity visitors, we wouldn’t have these great testimonials in person to share and build solidarity. If we thought of the challenges of travelling with a film crew in Niger we wouldn’t have a wonderful documentary that we will soon be able to share with you. And if we backed away from technology from fear of glitches, we wouldn’t have the online fundraising platform that will allow people to join in our Good Friday Fast. When we take a leap of Faith, many wonderful things can happen. And thankfully, in this case there is playback!
It is our pleasure to share with you the launch of our Share Lent campaign and to be part of the many exciting activities happening across the country over the next 40 days!
