Speaking up for rights and protesting injustices are powers that we take for granted in Canada. In parts of the Global South, however, this can be dangerous. Communities are often threatened and criminalized for defending their rights to healthy land, air and water.
It is therefore crucial to amplify the voices of our sisters and brothers who are fighting to protect our common home. This is a Catholic imperative because, as Pope Francis writes,
a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.(Laudato Si’, 49)
