2013 Education Campaign

Development and Peace is launching its new campaign, A Voice for Justice, in response to reports from mine-affected communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America that are experiencing conflict, pollution, forced displacements and other negative impacts from the presence of Canadian mines.

World Youth Day
in Rio de Janeiro
World Youth Day (WYD) held in July was an extraordinary opportunity for Development and Peace to speak with young Canadian pilgrims about how they can live out the inspirational call of our newly-elected Pope to be aware of the poverty and injustice that surrounds us and to take action.

Development and Peace Youth Programs Officer Shelley Burgoyne represented the organisation at the gathering, and spoke one-on-one with hundreds of pilgrims. Some Canadian pilgrims shared experiences they’ve had with their local Development and Peace groups in their schools and parishes. Others less familiar with the organization expressed relief and delight in learning that such an organization, rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, existed in Canada.

Having participated as a pilgrim herself at two other WYD events, Shelley recognized the importance of presenting opportunities for action for when the pilgrims return home, often still on a “spiritual high,” and she encouraged them to become members of our movement.

Horn of Africa
Two years later
Two years after the emergency call to help the people suffering from drought and hungerin the Horn of Africa, a Development and Peace delegation visited Ethiopia to see firsthand the work done thanks to your donations.

In the midst of the emergency, it was urgent to meet the need for food, but subsequently, longer-term projects have been undertaken to help communities resume their agricultural activities and protect themselves in times of drought.

Our Ethiopia 2013 special report will tell you more about the work of our partners with urban refugees, the distribution of drought resistant seeds to agro-pastoral communities, the construction of terraced fields and the establishment of a tree nursery.

In the special report, you will also find pictures and comments from some members of the delegation including Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of Ottawa, Bishop Noël Simard of Valleyfield and Mr. Dick Mynen, a member of our National Council.
Emergency in Syria
Thank you for your donations!
Development and Peace would like to thank all those who contributed to the emergency call launched in late June for the victims of the conflict in Syria. Thanks to your generosity, we have so far raised $760,000 for our emergency relief program to provide basic assistance to refugees both inside and outside the refugee camps, as well as to host families in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

Visit our Syria Emergency page for the latest news including articles on a bakery project and medical clinics, and watch a video that shows the ongoing plight of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and how Development and Peace and Caritas Lebanon are making a difference in their lives.

Please continue to pray so that all parties involved in this conflict, nationally and internationally, find a political solution to the crisis in order to build lasting peace in Syria and the Middle East.
